China’s smartphone shoppers bolster JD.com

JD.com, China’s Amazon-like ecommerce platform, surprised analysts yesterday by achieving its first profitable quarter since going public two years ago, helped by Chinese consumers using smartphones to shop.

In what the company called a “milestone” quarter, net profits made an unexpected about-turn by rising to Rmb239m ($35m) compared with a loss of Rmb910m in the first quarter of last year. Analysts polled by Bloomberg had forecast a Rmb851m loss.

Orders increased 39 per cent compared with the first quarter of last year. In particular, the proportion of orders placed through smartphones more than doubled to 81 per cent of total orders in the first three months of this year.

China has the world’s biggest mobile payment market — with more than 50 times more payments than in the US last year at Rmb38tn. The ease and ubiquity of mobile payments means that for Chinese shoppers, the next order is only a swipe away wherever they are.

Revenues rose 41.2 per cent compared with the first quarter of last year to Rmb76.2bn.

Shares in JD.com, listed on Nasdaq, rose 7.5 per cent after trading opened before falling back to sit 6.7 per cent higher at $38.20 by lunchtime in New York.

JD.com is China’s second-largest business-to-consumer marketplace after Alibaba’s Tmall, and bought Walmart’s local ecommerce platform last year.

The company is benefiting from increasingly wealthy customers moving away from eBay-like consumer-to-consumer platforms to the well-known brands offered by JD.com.

Drone delivery is JD.com’s next frontier: the company told state media last month that it was building 150 operation sites for unmanned drone delivery in the mountainous province of Sichuan.
